Success for the Sixth Amendment Task Force

Congratulations to Sixth Amendment Task Force volunteers for their role in helping to protect the rights of individuals charged with misdemeanors. In 2010, the team filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a Colorado statute that required indigent individuals charged with misdemeanors to meet with a prosecutor before counsel was appointed. Task Force members also brought the matter to the attention of legislators and during the 2013 regular legislative session, the Colorado Legislature passed a bill to repeal the statute. This legislation resolved all the claims in the lawsuit and the case was voluntarily dismissed. Thank you to all the Sixth Amendment volunteers who contributed to this case over the years—your efforts inside and outside the courtroom were instrumental in protecting these important rights!  For more details, click here.
