Initial Colorado Lawyers Committee Young Lawyers Division Teams and Areas of Focus
The following are areas of focus for the initial Colorado Lawyers Committee Young Lawyers Division (“CLC YLD”):
- Fundraising and Events Team
The Fundraising and Events Team directs fundraising for the YLD and plans YLD events. The team plans (jointly with the PR and Membership Team) several CLC YLD educational or networking events per year.
- Public Relations Team
This team is actively involved in social media, and will help develop the CLC and YLD websites (including implementation of mobile website capabilities). The team produces a video about the CLC and its projects which is shown at the CLC Awards Luncheon each May. This team is responsible for setting and meeting YLD membership goals. The team also works with the Fundraising and Events Team to publicize events and maintain an active CLC YLD presence in the Colorado legal community.
- Nonprofit Legal Audit and Special Projects Team
An excellent opportunity for transactional attorneys, this team helps organize the twice-yearly Nonprofit Legal Audit Clinic co-sponsored by the CLC and the Association of Corporate Counsel–Colorado Chapter. The Legal Audit Clinic is a half-day program for small nonprofits with limited operating budgets where teams of volunteer transactional attorneys review a checklist with participating nonprofits to evaluate their legal health. Law students may participate in the clinic by helping with logistics and communications with lawyers. This team also works on other special projects, including the Nonpartisan Election Call Center. Team members help facilitate the trainings, coordinate volunteers and organize the logistics, they will also answer phones at the call center.
- Denver Legal Night Team
This team has taken over responsibility for Denver Legal Night, including ensuring sufficient volunteer participation, hosting trainings, communicating with immigration and family lawyers, soliciting feedback, working with Legal Night venues, and safeguarding the sustainability of this valuable service to the Denver community. Law students who join this team can participate in Legal Night as interpreters or coordinators. This team works with the Denver Legal Night co-sponsors: the Young Lawyers Division of the Denver Bar Association and the Denver Access to Justice Committee.
- Hate Crimes Education Team
This team works with the Hate Crimes Education Task Force co-chairs Tarek Saad (Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP) and Phyllis Wan (Hogan Lovells US LLP) to expand and strengthen the longstanding CLC Hate Crimes Education program. The team has attended and participated in Hate Crimes presentations (the script is on this website) and helped coordinate our new partnership (for outreach to minority communities) with the US Department of Justice. In the future, the team will expand outreach to teachers, schools, and volunteers. This team will also partner with the Colorado Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and their Bullyproof Anti-Bullying Initiative to solicit feedback and implement ideas to reduce instances of bullying, hate crimes, and bias in Colorado schools.
- Strategic Planning Team
This team is responsible for implementing the organization and direction of the CLC YLD. This team drafted the original YLD Charter, is currently evaluating the strategic direction of the YLD, and will devise and implement plans that ensure a vibrant and active organization.
