Voting Rights Hearing A Success

NCVR Hearing (Judd Choate)The Colorado Lawyers Committee was honored to be a co-sponsor, with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, of the National Commission on Voting Rights Colorado/New Mexico hearing. Held on Friday, March 7 at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, the hearing included two panels of voting rights experts: one focused on the challenges of providing access to the polls to non-English speakers and individuals with disabilities; the other covered the implementation of several election administration initiatives, including the Colorado Voter Access and Modernized Elections Act.  Four Guest Commissioners presided at the hearing: John Zakhem (Zakhem Law, LLC), Rosemary Harris Lytle (President, NAACP Colorado/Montana/Wyoming State Conference), Dede Feldman (former New Mexico State Senator), and Lonna Atkeson (Professor of Political Science, University of New Mexico); nine witnesses testified followed by public testimony. The hearing is one of 25 to be held nationwide; once the hearings are concluded, the National Commission on Voting Rights will submit a report with its findings to members of Congress as they consider legislation to amend the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  Many thanks to our other partners: Colorado Common Cause, Common Cause New Mexico, The Legal Center for People with Disabilities and Older People, The Sweetser law Firm, P.C., and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.   A special thanks to the Election Task Force volunteers Elizabeth Steele and Dan Sweetser for their help in organizing this successful event!
